“Klaatu barada niktu” , 17’19”, 2002

Klaatu barada nikto

“Apart from unbelievable miracles,
can highly developed technology also
bring about moral redemption?”

The night shots of Klaatu barada nikto were taken on the 20th and the 21st of May 2002, between the barricades of demonstrators, and the impenetrable protective shield created by the German security forces on the occasion of the Berlin visit of US President George W. Bush and his Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice. Sequences from the science fiction classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (USA 1951, directed by Robert Wise) as well as found film-footage, visual material, and selected sound recordings were also included in the work.

What the Berlin public – and the president himself – hoped for and expected was a meaningful encounter and public speech, which was hindered by no more than the politically inhospitable atmosphere. The video approaches this unfulfilled wish to experience the president and his message in person. At the same time, its title, Klaatu barada nikto, delivers the quintessence of George W. Bush’s “Berlin Address”.
