Trine Lise Nedreaas
Singer with Butterflies
Duration: 03:56 min.
Production year: 2004/2005
Media: source, DV cam; support, DVD

Statement
A singer’s hour-length performance for camera has been edited down to the gaps between numbers - the beginnings and the ends of his absent songs. Stuttering, hesitating and nervous he readies himself to perform, the moment arrives, he breathes in to begin and is interrupted by the end – over and over again. “In Singer with Butterflies a butterfly appears as a memento mori, an element of elegy which is typical of many of Nedreaas’ works. It points to a central idea relevant to all the works, where large themes are embodied within the small and particular. Sentimental and perhaps bizarre acts […] thus transcend their limitations. In this way, her many “Forget me nots” express a muted humanism, becoming elevated from the purely anecdotal, to act instead as a metaphor for universal human experience.”
